Men’s mile record broken for first time since 1999
A New Era for the Men’s Mile Record
Men s mile record broken for first – Josh Kerr has firmly established himself as a dominant force in track and field, adding a monumental achievement to his growing list of accolades. The British athlete, widely recognized for reigniting excitement in mid-distance running, delivered a performance of historic proportions on Saturday. Running with precision and power, Kerr completed the mile in an astonishing 3 minutes and 42.66 seconds. This remarkable time shattered the previous world record, which had stood unchallenged for nearly three decades.
Surpassing the Legend of Rome
The setting for this triumph was the Diamond League meet held in London. Within the hallowed grounds of the London Stadium, Kerr surpassed the legendary mark set by Moroccan runner Hicham El Guerrouj. El Guerrouj had originally clocked 3 minutes and 43.13 seconds during a competition in Rome back in 1999. That original record had endured for 27 years, becoming a benchmark for generations of runners. Upon crossing the finish line, the 28-year-old Edinburgh native celebrated with a joyous lap of honor around the track, soaking in the atmosphere of the moment.
“It was just me, my shoes and the track,” Kerr reflected on the experience. “I was absolutely deaf in that last 110 meters.”
The margin of victory was substantial, with Kerr finishing more than three seconds ahead of his closest competitor. American runner Yared Nuguse secured the second-place position with a time of 3:45.
