Civil Aeronautics Board reports, the predecessor organization to the Federal Aviation Administration, provided crucial documentation. However, the breakthrough came from Puerto Rico hearing records and a map created by Air Force pilots who witnessed the crash during a training mission in the area.
Previous search efforts in 2024 using a towed sonar array were thwarted by unfavorable weather conditions. Matthews and volunteers from his Air/Sea Heritage Foundation planned another attempt using advanced underwater drones originally designed for military mine detection. Tony Romeo, CEO of Deep Sea Vision, had been discussing potential collaboration with Matthews for months. When one of his vessels happened to pass near Puerto Rico in April, the timing proved perfect.

Romeo noted that Deep Sea Vision had previously conducted an unsuccessful six-month search for Amelia Earhart’s aircraft. His personal connection to the case ran deep—his father served as both mechanic and pilot for Pan Am airlines. Remarkably, the drone used in this search already bore a Pan Am sticker on its exterior.
Romeo reflected on the significance: “This discovery offered a rare opportunity to connect with a pivotal moment in history while demonstrating how the proper application of research and cutting-edge technology can unlock even the most elusive undersea mysteries.” Matthews’ team combined years of research with historical weather data to create a comprehensive map identifying a 10-square-nautical-mile search area. The drone successfully located the wreckage within this designated zone, bringing closure to a decades-old mystery and honoring the legacy of the wreckage of Pan Am plane that transformed aviation safety forever.
