Man faces attempted murder charges in attack on home of OpenAI’s Sam Altman
Man Charged with Attempted Murder in Attack on Sam Altman’s Home
A Texas resident accused of hurling a Molotov cocktail at the residence of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, now faces multiple state charges, including two counts of attempted murder. The arraignment for these allegations is set for Tuesday afternoon. Concurrently, the 20-year-old is under federal investigation for possessing an unregistered firearm and attempting to destroy property via explosive devices.
The U.S. Department of Justice claims Moreno-Gama was found with materials promoting opposition to artificial intelligence and advocating for criminal acts against AI leaders and stakeholders. “Violence cannot be the norm for expressing disagreement, whether political or technological,” stated Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. “These alleged actions – which damaged property and could have cost lives – will be pursued with vigor.”
OpenAI’s Response to the Threat
OpenAI emphasized in a statement that “to ensure society benefits from AI, we must engage through the democratic process” and “we welcome sincere debate.” However, the organization stressed that “violence against anyone, regardless of their role in AI development, has no place in our democracy.” Authorities have not disclosed the specific individual or property targeted in the attacks, though OpenAI confirmed to the BBC that the incident occurred at Altman’s San Francisco home.
According to the criminal complaint, Moreno-Gama ignited an exterior gate at Altman’s residence around 4:00 p.m. local time on Friday before escaping on foot. He is also accused of attempting to set fire to OpenAI’s San Francisco headquarters, where ChatGPT is developed, approximately an hour later. Security personnel reported that he tried to use a chair to smash the building’s glass doors during the incident.
Officers retrieved incendiary devices, a kerosene jug, and a lighter from Moreno-Gama. The documents he allegedly carried discussed potential risks of AI to humanity, with a section titled: “Some more words on the matter of our impending extinction.” These materials also included a statement asserting, “If I advocate for others to kill and commit crimes, I must lead by example and show full sincerity in my message,” along with the names and addresses of AI company board members, CEOs, and investors.
FBI Raid and Media Scrutiny
Earlier Monday, the FBI executed a raid in Texas linked to the incident, as shared on X by Director Kash Patel. The attack follows a recent investigative profile in The New Yorker that questioned Altman’s credibility and suitability to lead a company creating contentious AI technology. After the incident at his home, Altman referenced the “incendiary article about me” and called for reducing both rhetorical and physical confrontations. He later expressed regret for connecting the article to the alleged attack following social media criticism.
OpenAI’s 2022 launch of ChatGPT sparked widespread public interest in AI chatbots, leading to a surge in investment. This has raised concerns among investors and analysts, who remain cautious about the technology’s implications.
