On Saturday, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani held a face-to-face encounter with former President Barack Obama at a Bronx-based childcare center. The event featured the two leaders welcoming children and parents within the early childhood education facility and participating in a reading session with a group of students who gathered on the floor.
As a democratic socialist, Mamdani campaigned on the pledge to establish the city’s inaugural universal childcare initiative. To advance this goal, Mamdani’s administration has obtained state funding to broaden the existing universal pre-K program citywide and introduce childcare services for a select group of two-year-olds starting next fall.
“Between singing ‘Wheels on the Bus,’ the two leaders exchanged insights on the Mayor’s vision for the city and the significance of ensuring New York’s youngest residents receive a solid foundation,” stated Mamdani’s press secretary, Joe Calvello.
A source close to the planning revealed that Obama and Mamdani had a short private discussion before participating in the classroom reading activity. The individual noted that both leaders’ teams had long anticipated the meeting since Mamdani’s November election, with the chance arising in the final days due to Obama’s planned visit over the weekend.
Politico was the first to disclose details about the meeting. During the event, neither Obama nor Mamdani engaged with reporters present, though they briefly acknowledged cameras outside as they exited the facility.
Three sources close to the call indicated that the leaders had a conversation before November’s Election Day. In the call, Obama remarked that public scrutiny would focus on Mamdani’s ability to manage the nation’s largest city as a democratic socialist, along with the number of critics prepared to criticize if the endeavor faltered.
Additionally, Obama advised Mamdani, who had not received his endorsement in the 2025 election, to emphasize hiring competent personnel for his administration.
