These coordinated attacks represent Kyiv's ongoing strategy to extend the conflict beyond its borders, targeting both military installations and civilian infrastructure within Russian territory. The relentless aerial campaign seeks to disrupt Moscow's supply chains while demonstrating to the Russian public that the war's consequences are no longer confined to Ukraine.
The assault focused heavily on logistics hubs and energy facilities, with two major warehouses belonging to Wildberries, Russia's largest online retailer, sustaining significant damage. According to reports from Russian officials, one facility in Kotovsk within the Tambov region—located approximately 220 miles from the Ukrainian border—was struck alongside another warehouse in Elektrostal, situated roughly 30 miles east of Moscow. Both buildings were engulfed in flames following the drone impacts.
Wildberries founder Tatyana Kim provided updates later on Saturday morning, confirming that emergency crews had successfully extinguished the blaze at the Kotovsk location. Meanwhile, video footage distributed through Russian media channels depicted dramatic scenes at the Elektrostal warehouse, where enormous columns of smoke rose high into the sky above the burning structure.
Oil Depot Attack Prompts Civilian Evacuations
Compounding the damage, a Ukrainian drone also struck an oil storage facility in Noginsk, a city positioned just north of Elektrostal. The impact ignited a fire that necessitated the evacuation of residents from a nearby apartment building and the temporary relocation of patients from a local maternity hospital. Andrei Vorobyov, the governor of the Moscow region, reported that thirty-seven individuals sustained injuries in the Moscow area, with one victim subsequently succumbing to their wounds in a hospital setting.
Regional authorities in Tambov provided additional casualty figures, with governor Yevgeny Pervyshov stating that seven night shift employees perished at the Kotovsk warehouse while twenty-five others were injured. Beyond the Moscow region, local officials in Belgorod reported that a separate drone attack on Saturday afternoon claimed one life and wounded another person.
Drone debris caused additional disruption in Elektrostal, where fragments struck a kindergarten building and ignited a fire that was later contained. In Vladimir, approximately 110 miles east of Moscow, a residential structure was hit by a Ukrainian drone, producing a brief fire but resulting in no casualties, according to Vladimir governor Alexander Avdeyev.
Strategic Significance of the Attacks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the operations through a Telegram message on Saturday, highlighting the strategic importance of the targets. He described the strikes as hitting two "significant logistical facilities in the Moscow and Tambov regions" that served critical functions for Russia's war machine.
"These facilities were used by the aggressor to supply sanctioned components for the production of drones and navigation equipment," he wrote. An oil facility was also hit, he said.
Zelenskyy further noted that Ukrainian special operations forces conducted additional strikes against targets in the Sea of Azov and in occupied territories, broadening the scope of Ukraine's offensive capabilities.
The Russian Defense Ministry provided comprehensive statistics on the night's operations, reporting that air defense systems intercepted a total of 379 Ukrainian drones across nineteen Russian regions, as well as over the illegally annexed Crimea, the Sea of Azov, and the Black Sea. These figures underscore the intensity of Ukraine's aerial campaign and its ability to project power deep into Russian territory while maintaining operational effectiveness against sophisticated air defense networks.
The attacks come as the conflict enters its fifth year, with Kyiv increasingly determined to demonstrate that Russia cannot conduct its war effort without facing consequences at home. By targeting logistics centers that supply components for military equipment and energy infrastructure that supports both civilian and military operations, Ukraine aims to gradually erode Russia's capacity to sustain prolonged combat while simultaneously raising the psychological cost of the invasion for ordinary Russian citizens.
