Shortly following the incident, footage captured on a mobile phone began circulating across social media platforms. The video clearly shows three distinct gunshots being fired. Patterson emphasized that this particular recording represents only one angle of the complete event.
"I ask the community to recognize that there is other video that they have not seen, that's not circulating online, that will be reviewed as part of this investigation,"
he explained.
"So, to the extent that they can as we all navigate this trauma together, we try to remain calm and remember that not all perspectives are online right now."
Location and Historical Context
The confrontation took place on a well-known city street situated within a vibrant neighborhood featuring restaurants, bars, retail shops, and residential properties. This location sits less than two miles from the Wisconsin state Capitol building. Video documentation reveals multiple vehicles halted in an intersection while bystanders observed the developing situation.
This area holds significance in Madison's recent history. In 2015, a white police officer shot and killed Tony Robinson, who was biracial, on this very same street. That incident generated substantial community protests. The district attorney ultimately decided not to bring charges against the officer, concluding that the use of force was justified. Robinson's family received a $3.35 million settlement from the city in 2017.
Community Reaction and Political Response
While police have not officially confirmed the races of either the officer or the victim, local advocates for Madison's Black community stated that the deceased man was Black.
"Another Black man is dead on a Madison street, and our community watched him die before we even knew his name,"
said Brandi Grayson, who leads the Urban Triage advocacy organization based in Madison.
"That is the cruelty of state violence."
Protesters gathered near the scene on Wednesday evening, with some chanting demands to arrest the involved officers. Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong was among those who assembled throughout the night to demonstrate.
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers shared his thoughts via social media, noting he had been briefed on the officer-involved shooting.
"There must be transparency and accountability in any investigation moving forward,"
Evers wrote in his statement.
Details of the Confrontation
According to Chief Patterson, officers were initially responding to reports of an individual attempting to gain entry into parked automobiles within the neighborhood. The suspect escaped on a bicycle, navigating through adjacent backyards in an effort to evade capture before officers made contact with him on the street.
During the ensuing struggle, the suspect either fell from or was removed from his bicycle. He then produced a knife and wounded one of the responding officers. An officer attempted to deploy a taser, but the device proved ineffective. The same officer who sustained the knife wound subsequently discharged his firearm. The man who was shot later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
Patterson characterized the officer who fired as a veteran member of the force, though he declined to provide additional specifics.
"When a knife is produced during officers' apprehension arrest, the overall situation is clearly elevated. It becomes incredibly dangerous and it obviously increases risks for everyone there,"
the chief observed.
"For every officer. For the person as well. I think it severely narrows the scope of options and possible outcomes."
The police chief further noted that the weapon was not a small folding knife, but rather a large, fixed-blade instrument. He indicated that a photograph of the knife would eventually be made available to the public.
"My understanding is there are some witnesses that also saw this, so I think we gotta, as a community, recognize we don't have all the information right now, and we have to allow our investigators to piece things together and get as clear a picture as we can,"
Patterson concluded.
Additionally, another officer sustained injuries during the incident, though the exact cause remains unclear. Police do not believe this second officer's wounds resulted from the taser deployment.
