Seven arrested at base demo accused of supporting banned group
Seven Arrested at RAF Base During Peace Protest Over Iran Conflict
Authorities have detained seven individuals at an RAF airbase following a demonstration against military actions in Iran. The arrests occurred on Sunday as part of a six-day peace camp, which concluded on Monday. According to Suffolk Police, the detained persons were held on suspicion of backing the proscribed group Palestine Action, which is linked to the incident involving a US fighter jet downed in Iran. The protest was triggered by reports suggesting the aircraft had been stationed at Lakenheath airbase.
During the event, five men and two women were apprehended near the main entrance of the base. A police representative noted that the arrests were made “on suspicion of supporting a proscribed organisation,” emphasizing the need to uphold legal standards. “Suffolk Police has a duty to enforce the law impartially, regardless of future changes,” the spokesperson added, stating that action would be taken if offenses were confirmed.
“They have been taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning,” the statement continued.
The High Court had previously invalidated the ban on Palestine Action in February, yet the Home Office was granted permission to challenge the ruling, maintaining the group’s proscription until the appeal is resolved. The Lakenheath Alliance For Peace reported that the arrests followed a speech by retired colonel Chris Romberg, who addressed the gathering of demonstrators.
“The arrests happened after retired colonel Chris Romberg made a speech to protesters,” the alliance stated.
Additionally, Suffolk Police confirmed that two individuals faced charges of obstructing traffic due to a roadblock set up at the base on Saturday. The protest, which included a 24-hour vigil, was part of broader efforts to oppose military involvement in the region.
