NYPD officer dies in medical episode while deployed to Kuwait in Iran war

NYPD Officer Passes Away During Deployment in Kuwait Amid Iran Conflict

A New York City police officer has succumbed to medical complications while stationed in Kuwait as part of the U.S. military’s involvement in the conflict against Iran. The incident occurred at Camp Buehring, where Major Sorffly Davius lost his life on Friday, according to statements from city and state authorities.

A Life of Service and Dedication

Gov. Kathy Hochul expressed her condolences, calling Davius a “true Citizen Soldier” who was also a devoted husband and father. Davius had previously served in the 42nd Infantry Division of the U.S. Army National Guard, achieving the rank of major. His NYPD career began in 2014, when he was assigned to the 79th Precinct.

“Today, and always, we keep his family in our thoughts and prayers,” the NYPD stated. “May we never forget Officer Davius’ sacrifice and may his memory be a blessing.”

Before his overseas deployment, Davius was recognized for his service with the Joint Task Force Empire Shield, a National Guard unit responsible for securing New York’s critical sites. Hochul highlighted his contributions, noting, “His life is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices made by our National Guard members, who balance their roles as citizens, first responders, and soldiers.”

Broader Casualties in the Joint Operation

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch honored Davius in a Saturday statement, emphasizing his career’s focus on service to both his country and the city. NBC News has contacted the National Guard and U.S. Central Command for further details.

The ongoing joint U.S.-Israeli campaign against Iran has resulted in seven U.S. service members killed. Six of these casualties occurred in Kuwait, while the seventh died Saturday evening from injuries sustained during a March 1 attack on U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia, as reported by U.S. Central Command.
