New youth clubs for anti-social behaviour hotspots

England is set to launch its inaugural batch of youth clubs designed to offer job and wellbeing support to young individuals. Eight such hubs will debut in regions identified as hotspots for anti-social behaviour, such as Bristol, Nottingham, and Leeds. These centres will provide employment guidance, health resources, and wellbeing support to youth under 18, aiming to steer them away from criminal activity.

Government initiative to restore opportunities

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy emphasized that the hubs are “about more than bricks and mortar” and reflect the government’s commitment to young people. She stated: “The shuttering of over 1,000 youth centres since 2010 has stripped communities of essential services, relationships, and pathways for young people. Our goal is to restore what was lost.”

“What makes them different is that we’re joining things up – wellbeing programs, crime prevention strategies, career coaching, and youth services in a single, integrated space,” Nandy added. “Ensuring that teenagers have a safe place to gather, a voice to be heard, and the tools to succeed is central to this initiative.”

Broader plan to address knife crime

The initiative plans to establish 50 such centres nationwide. Services will be available to youth aged 10-18, as well as those with special educational needs and disabilities up to 25. This development coincides with the government’s upcoming campaign to target knife crime. Ministers hope to halve knife crime within a decade, safeguarding lives and communities.

“Knife crime has a profound impact on lives,” said Sarah Jones, the policing minister. “Each statistic represents a child who never returned home, a family shattered by loss, and a community gripped by fear.”

A £1.2 million initiative will be allocated to deliver targeted training in schools with high knife crime rates, support mentoring programs for at-risk students, and deploy school escorts along vulnerable routes. Jones further noted: “This Government will halve knife crime within a decade, saving lives and protecting communities.”
