Chalamet thanked by Royal Ballet and Opera boss for boosting ticket sales

Chalamet Recognized by Royal Ballet and Opera Leader for Increased Attendance

Alex Beard, the head of the Royal Ballet and Opera (RBO), has publicly acknowledged Hollywood actor Timothée Chalamet for a notable rise in ticket sales after his remarks about ballet and opera stirred controversy. Beard, speaking to The Times, highlighted the public’s strong reaction to Chalamet’s earlier comments, which suggested a waning interest in the classical art forms.

“I thought it important that we didn’t respond with a stuffy tone to Chalamet,” Beard remarked. “We simply said, ‘Take a look at what we’re doing, mate,’ such as the fact that our youngest audience members are aged 20 to 30.”

Beard noted that the post, shared on Instagram, garnered over two million interactions and half a million shares, leading to a quick uptick in ticket sales. “So cheers, Timmy!” he added, expressing appreciation for the attention. Chalamet’s comments, made during a conversation with Matthew McConaughey at the University of Texas in February, had initially drawn criticism from within the performing arts sector.

Seattle Opera Capitalizes on Actor’s Remarks

Despite the backlash, the Seattle Opera seized the moment, transforming Chalamet’s statement into a marketing campaign. They launched a special promotion for a Carmen performance, offering discounts to those who used the promo code “TIMOTHEE” during the event. The opera house even invited Chalamet to participate, saying, “Timmy, you’re welcome to use it too.”

In a broader interview with The Times, Beard also addressed the RBO’s recent dynamic pricing strategy. “What we do isn’t full-on dynamic pricing,” he clarified. “Prices remain steady during the priority-booking phase and the initial weeks of public sales. There’s a limit to how high top-tier tickets can go, and lower rates stay constant.” Beard argued that adjusting the highest prices could help maintain affordability for the rest of the audience.
