BBC sacked Scott Mills when ‘compelling new information’ emerged from underage accuser a decade after police investigation

Scott Mills, the 53-year-old Radio 2 presenter, was dismissed by the BBC following the appearance of ‘compelling’ new evidence from an underage accuser, which surfaced a decade after a prior police inquiry, according to recent claims.

BBC executives reportedly concluded they had no choice but to terminate Mills’ position as the corporation’s flagship morning show host after new details regarding his alleged behavior were uncovered, as noted by the Mirror.

Friends have expressed concern over Mills’ recent behavior, stating he has been avoiding phone calls and ‘gone to ground’ since the BBC’s announcement. This comes as the corporation’s leadership is said to have acted swiftly on the latest information.

Mills, who had served the BBC for 27 years, was let go, though it was later revealed he had been investigated for ‘serious sexual offences’ against a boy under 16 between 1997 and 2000. At the time, he was cleared of the allegations.

The Hampshire Police confirmed the sexual offences claims were first reported by a third party in 2016, with the force documenting the case and sending it to the Metropolitan Police for investigation. The Met verified they questioned Mills in 2016, but the Crown Prosecution Service found insufficient evidence, closing the case in 2019.

The BBC has not detailed the exact reasons for Mills’ termination, only stating it was tied to his ‘personal conduct.’ However, questions have been raised about why he remained on air despite being aware of his interview under caution between 2018 and 2019.

TV presenter Piers Morgan tweeted on X: ‘I’m puzzled. Scott was investigated by police a decade ago regarding alleged offenses from over 25 years prior, yet no action was taken and the case was closed. Now, he’s been fired over the same incident? The BBC should clarify why, certainly.’

Recent reports suggest fresh information was provided to the BBC concerning the same accuser but with new details not previously disclosed. This has sparked renewed scrutiny over the decision to dismiss Mills.

According to the Daily Mail, the complaint that led to his dismissal is believed to have originated from someone inspired by the Channel 5 docudrama about
