Balamory is back – Miss Hoolie and PC Plum lift the lid on what to expect
Balamory Reimagined: Original Cast Shares Insights on the New Series
Julie Wilson Nimmo, the voice behind Miss Hoolie, reflects on the enduring appeal of the show’s signature phrase. “What’s the story in Balamory?” she muses, noting that fans have repeatedly asked her that question over the past two decades. For many, the phrase evokes a vivid return to the whimsical world of Balamory, a cherished children’s series that once brought together a colorful island community through camaraderie and lighthearted problem-solving.
A New Chapter for a Beloved Show
After nearly 20 years since its final episode on CBeebies, Balamory is making a comeback this April. The revival features several returning stars, including Wilson Nimmo and Andrew Agnew, who reprise their iconic roles. “It’s a joy to be back in something we’ve always loved,” Agnew says, highlighting the emotional connection the cast maintains with the series.
“There are new stories in Balamory,” Wilson Nimmo adds, expressing excitement about the updated narrative. “It’s come at the perfect time—children are surrounded by animation now, but having shows that feature kids on screen is a rare treat.”
The return of the show coincides with broader concerns about the decline of UK-made children’s programming, as highlighted in a recent BBC report. Despite these challenges, the Balamory team remains optimistic about the series’ impact. “We hope some of those who grew up with the original will now share it with their children,” Wilson Nimmo says, calling the revival a “love letter to the original.”
Global Recognition and Nostalgic Moments
The show’s international reach has left a lasting impression on its cast. Wilson Nimmo recalls forming bonds with The Wiggles during a visit to Australia, while Agnew shares a humorous anecdote about being recognized in Turkey while in swimwear. “Kids approached me at the pool and said, ‘You’re PC Plum,’” he recalls.
The cast’s first look at the new scripts was a heartfelt reunion. “We were all emotional seeing the scripts again,” Wilson Nimmo says. “The songs brought back a lot of nostalgia.”
Cast and New Characters
The revival retains key figures from the original, such as Penny Pocket, the town’s shopkeeper, and Edie McCredie, the delivery driver. Agnew emphasizes PC Plum’s continued role, describing him as “still bumbling, still a bit clueless.” New characters, including Dr. Ollie (Carl Spencer) and The Harbourmaster (William Andrews), are also introduced, adding fresh dynamics to the island’s charm.
“They’re fantastic additions,” Agnew says. “Modernizing the show with new characters feels like a nice balance.”
While some original actors, like Miles Jupp (who played Archie), are absent, the series welcomes a new generation of creators. “Ava Potts is stepping into Archie’s shoes,” Wilson Nimmo notes, underscoring the show’s evolution while staying true to its roots. The duo confirms that new songs will be featured, though they remain familiar with the older tracks. “People still sing our songs to me,” Agnew jokes, “and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.”
The revival consists of two series, each with 10 episodes, produced by Lion Television Scotland. The first episode airs on Monday, 20th April, with all 10 episodes available on BBC iPlayer the same day. With its blend of nostalgia and innovation, Balamory promises to captivate both longtime fans and new audiences.
