Harry and Meghan arrive in Australia for four-day tour

Harry and Meghan Begin Four-Day Australia Tour

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex touched down in Australia for a brief four-day itinerary, blending charitable activities with lucrative private engagements. No longer functioning as working royals, the couple is participating in the trip as private individuals, with their expenses covered independently. Their schedule includes interactions with patients and staff at a children’s hospital, military veterans and their families, and survivors of domestic abuse.

Commercial Events Highlight the Visit

Prince Harry will address attendees at the InterEdge Psychosocial Safety Summit in Melbourne, an event where tickets range from A$1,000 to A$2,400 per person. Some proceeds from the summit benefit the charity Lifeline. Meanwhile, Meghan will host an exclusive “girls’ weekend” in Sydney, a women-only gathering featuring an in-person discussion with participants of the Her Best Life podcast. The event, held at a high-end beachfront hotel, includes VIP packages offering photo opportunities with the Duchess.

Financial Transparency Remains Unclear

While the couple’s private funding covers their travel and events, it is uncertain whether public funds are being used for security during their visit. Victoria and New South Wales police have confirmed their presence but have not disclosed if taxpayers are contributing to the operation. “The New South Wales Police Force will conduct an operation to ensure public safety during the visit by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex,” said a police representative. “This will involve additional security measures while minimising community disruption.”

Shift in Public Engagement Strategy

Their current trip marks their first return to Australia since 2018, when they spent nearly a week in the country shortly after their marriage. Unlike that time, which featured large public gatherings, this visit includes no planned meet-and-greets. The couple has opted for a more streamlined approach, prioritising direct engagement with specific groups over broader public interactions.

Brand Opportunities in Australia

There are indications that Australia could become a market for Meghan’s As Ever lifestyle brand, which has been showcased in a Netflix series produced by the couple’s company. Last year, the brand secured trademarks across 12 product categories in the country, according to government records. The tour also ends with a rugby match in Sydney, followed by a wellness retreat in the city, where the Duchess will participate in a private conversation with attendees.

Legal Context and Security Concerns

Harry’s trip is his first public appearance since being sued for defamation by Sentebale, the African charity he co-founded. The case has raised questions about his security arrangements, as he recently lost a court battle to reduce his level of royal protection in the UK. Australian authorities are monitoring the visit, balancing the need for safety with the goal of keeping costs low for taxpayers.

“Police routinely assess events and visits, deploying resources as needed to ensure community safety,” stated a Victoria Police spokesperson. “We are aware two prominent figures are visiting Melbourne in April.”
