Four arrested over murder of Scottish businessman in Kenya
A senior director from FICO, Campbell Scott, 58, was found dead in Makongo Forest, approximately 60 miles (96.5km) from Nairobi, in February of last year. His body was discovered in a sack, marking the conclusion of an investigation into his disappearance following a missed meeting at the JW Marriott Hotel in Westlands. Scott, who hailed from Dunfermline in Fife, had been in Nairobi for a conference before vanishing.
Kenyan authorities revealed that four suspects were detained in a coordinated operation across Ukunda, a coastal town 16 miles (25.8km) south of Mombasa. This arrest followed a separate inquiry into a violent robbery involving an American national near Nyali. The suspects were linked to Scott’s murder and multiple other violent crimes, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
“An operation was conducted by DCI officers drawn from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CR&IB) Headquarters, working jointly with their counterparts from SCCIO Nyali and SCCIO Msambweni (Ukunda),” stated the DCI. “The suspects, Bernard Mbusu, Isaac Kinoti Kobia, Evans Muthengi Mutaki, and Kelvin Mwangi Njoroge, were apprehended at Ideal Apartments, Ukunda. They have also been forensically tied to another robbery incident in Watamu, Malindi Sub-County.”
Scott was last seen at Havana nightclub the evening before his disappearance. Police believe he was taken to a property in the Pipeline district, a slum area 9.3 miles (15km) from his hotel. Prosecutors claim he was detained there to extract funds from his accounts. A post-mortem examination yielded inconclusive results, though pathologists noted the injuries were too minor to cause fatal harm.
Initially, two men—identified as a taxi driver and a nightclub waiter—were questioned, suspected of being the last to see Scott alive. Two were arrested in March last year, with one appearing in court on murder charges. Officers then sought three additional suspects, whose connections to the case were confirmed through forensic evidence and investigative efforts.
