Wireless Festival cancelled after Kanye West blocked from coming to UK
Wireless Festival Cancellation Follows Ye’s UK Entry Denial
This summer’s Wireless Festival has been called off after its headliner, Kanye West, also known as Ye, was denied entry into the United Kingdom. The decision came after the government rejected his application to travel, citing concerns about his potential impact on public morale. West had planned to perform at the London event, but his absence forced the cancellation of the festival.
West has long been at the center of controversy due to his remarks on antisemitism, racism, and his public identification with Nazi ideology. The Wireless Festival’s management stated that the Home Office had revoked Ye’s ETA, effectively barring him from the UK. This led to the cancellation of the festival and the issuance of refunds to ticket holders.
“The Home Office has withdrawn Ye’s ETA, denying him entry into the United Kingdom. As a result, Wireless Festival is cancelled and refunds will be issued to all ticket holders,” the festival declared. It added, “Antisemitism in all its forms is abhorrent, and we recognise the real and personal impact these issues have had. As Ye said today, he acknowledges that words alone are not enough, and in spite of this still hopes to be given the opportunity to begin a conversation with the Jewish community in the UK.”
Presale tickets for the festival sold out by midday on Tuesday, while the general public could purchase them starting Wednesday at the same hour. Earlier that day, the Home Office confirmed West had submitted an ETA application on Monday. The refusal was based on the argument that his presence would not be in the public’s best interest.
Visitors to the UK who don’t require a visa for short stays under six months or already hold immigration status must obtain an ETA. The cancellation sparked reactions from critics, with a Campaign Against Antisemitism representative noting, “With no headliner and multiple sponsors dropping out, Wireless has had to cancel the festival. How did it come to this? Apparently ‘no concerns were highlighted’ about Kanye West at the time of the booking. Who were they consulting? A wall? That’s what happens when the only stakeholders you speak to are those who stand to make a profit.”
“It’s nice that now Wireless is saying ‘Antisemitism in all its forms is abhorrent’ when just a few hours ago the festival promoter was saying we all need to forgive Kanye for declaring himself a full-blown Nazi only recently,” the group added.
West expressed his willingness to engage with the Jewish community in the UK, stating he would be “grateful” to meet representatives in person to “listen.” He acknowledged that his past statements were insufficient and emphasized that “I’ll have to show change through my actions. If you’re open, I’m here.”
Melvin Benn, the managing director of Festival Republic, which organizes Wireless, mentioned efforts to contact Jewish groups after the festival was announced. “They have refused a meeting,” Benn said, though he noted these attempts occurred over the past couple of days.
In response, a Board of Deputies spokesperson told the BBC: “Neither the Board of Deputies nor, we understand, the Jewish Leadership Council has refused any request to meet with the Wireless festival organisers. When the Board of Deputies received a letter from Melvin Benn on 6 April, proposing to meet in response to a letter we sent setting out our concerns, we responded positively.”
Despite the meeting, the board maintained that West’s invitation should have been canceled regardless. That decision has now been finalized, removing the need for further negotiations between the rapper and the festival organizers. Benn, a prominent UK music industry figure, argued that West’s mental health played a role in his behavior, stating, “Mental health is not something that disappears overnight. People suffer psychotic or bipolar episodes for many years… And I think people are forgetting that.”
