The weirdest heists in history after thieves’ brazen KitKat lorry raid

Unusual Heists Through Time: From KitKat Lorry Robbery to Living Bug Steals

Not all heists demand the flair of Ocean’s Eleven or the charm of Wallace and Gromit. While diamonds and gold often steal the spotlight, other treasures can be equally easy targets for thieves.

A Chocolate Conundrum in Europe

This week’s headlines revealed a brazen theft involving 413,793 KitKat chocolate bars. A lorry transporting 12 tons of the iconic chocolate-covered wafer snack from Nestlé’s Perugia factory to Poland was intercepted, leaving the company’s latest Formula One-themed collection in the hands of criminals.

“We chose to share our experience publicly in the hope of highlighting a growing trend in criminal activity,” KitKat stated in a lighthearted response to the incident.

A Dark Easter in 2023

Just a week before Easter, a bizarre theft left the UK in disbelief. In 2023, 200,000 Cadbury Creme Eggs disappeared from an industrial unit in Telford, Shropshire. The culprit, 32-year-old Joby Pool, had previously stolen a tractor in October 2022 to aid the February heist. According to BBC News, Pool drove the stolen cargo north on the M42 before surrendering to authorities.

Germany’s Odd Cargo Raids

Looking back to the late 2010s, Germany saw a wave of strange vehicle robberies. In August 2017, thieves spirited away a semi-trailer filled with 20 tons of Nutella and Kinder Surprise eggs, taking thousands of plastic toys with them. A few days later, another semi-trailer containing 30 tons of fruit juice vanished from Wittenburg, a town near Hamburg.

The Record-Breaking Chocolate Heist

However, the most audacious act of the year came in January 2018, when two truck trailers packed with 44 tons of chocolate were taken from an industrial park in Freiburg. This surpasses earlier thefts and marks a significant milestone in the history of confectionery-related crime.

A Cheese Mystery in Wisconsin

Across the Atlantic, a unique case of cheese theft in 2016 offered a twist on the typical heist. Police in Marshfield, Wisconsin, were alerted that wheels of parmesan worth $90,000 had vanished from a distributor. Two weeks later, they recovered the stolen cheese in a warehouse near Grand Chute, though another trailer with $70,000 in dairy products was also taken from Germantown.

The London Cheese Fraud

In October 2024, a different kind of theft struck London’s Neal’s Yard. A group claiming to represent a French wholesale distributor demanded 950 wheels of cheddar, totaling 22 tons and valued at £300,000. The scheme collapsed when the fraudsters disappeared with the product, leaving cheesemakers unpaid and scrambling to meet their obligations.

Butterflies and Bugs

The Philadelphia Insectarium and Butterfly Pavilion, once a pioneering US bug zoo, became the center of a strange incident in August 2018. Dr. John Cambridge arrived to find all the tanks and shelves empty, as if the bugs had been spirited away while still alive. The event led to a four-part documentary and internal disputes over who to blame for the loss.
